Quick Leather Bindings aims to break away from traditional binding technique while utilizing archival materials and methods to keep the structures strong. Processes for working with leather have been minimized to accommodate Smith’s needs as a book artist. No elaborate equipment is needed. Tools are limited to needles, scissors, bone folder, X-Acto™ knife and metal straightedge. Wet glue and paste is replaced by archival dry adhesives.
All the bindings described here are hard cover quarter leather and designed for relatively slim books (up to a couple hundred pages). The book boards are constructed before the book block is sewn in. All the bindings can be made with cloth if you prefer not to use leathers.
